Pinot Nero Castello della Sala Antinori Umbria I.G.T.

Produced since 1990 from 100% Pinot Nero grapes, this wine is, in a sense, the "alter ego" of Cervaro della Sala. Together, they represent two distinct expressions of the complex and refined soul of the Castello della Sala estate. The vineyards are situated at over 400 meters above sea level on calcareous soils rich in fossils, featuring sedimentary sands dating back to the Pliocene epoch

Castello della Sala One of the Antinori Family’s Most Iconic Estates

The Castello della Sala estate is located in Umbria, just a few kilometers from Orvieto and the Tuscan border. It is a place where medieval history and oenological innovation blend perfectly. Originally built in 1350 by Angelo Monaldeschi della Vipera whose family was deeply involved in the factional struggles of Orvieto the structure is a magnificent medieval fortress surrounded by vineyards. It features a tower overlooking the valley and subterranean cellars carved into the tuff rock, ideal for aging wine. The property was acquired by Niccolò Antinori in 1940 with the ambitious goal of producing world-class white wines in Umbria, a region which at the time was less renowned for whites than for reds.

The Character of Pinot Nero Castello della Sala

Crafted from 100% Pinot Nero, this wine represents one of the Antinori family’s most fascinating challenges: producing an excellent red wine in a land historically dedicated to great whites. Appearance: A delicate ruby red or brilliant garnet, typical of the variety. Bouquet: Delicate notes of small red fruits (cherry, currant, wild strawberry), violet, and rose, with spicy hints of pink peppercorn. Palate: Elegant, silky, and savory. The tannins are remarkably fine and sweet, leading to a persistent and fresh finish

Best Pairings for Pinot Nero Castello della Sala

This wine pairs magnificently with roasted white meats, mushroom based dishes (such as risottos or tagliatelle), feathered game, or medium aged pecorino cheeses. While it is impressive if enjoyed now, we suggest allowing it to rest in the cellar to reach full and harmonious maturity, where it will develop significant aromatic complexity. Aging Potential: 5+ years. Serving Temperature: 16°C to 18°C. Glassware: Medium width Burgundy style stems.
