Mare Antico Decugnano dei Barbi Orvieto Classico Superiore D.O.C.

The Mare Antico white wine from the Decugnano dei Barbi winery is an Orvieto Classico Superiore D.O.C. It takes its name from the ancient sea that covered the Decugnano lands during the Pliocene epoch. This ancient sea rendered the soils rich in fossils and seashells, imbuing the wine with an unmistakable mineral and marine character. This wine represents the unique terroir of the estate, where the roots of the oldest vines plunge into a fossil-rich soil that holds the history of a submerged world, hence the name, Mare Antico (Ancient Sea).

The Ancient History of the Land Where Mare Antico Grapes Grow Today

Historically, with the earliest documentation dating back to 1212, the lands that produce the Mare Antico Decugnano dei Barbi Orvieto Classico Superiore D.O.C. belonged to the Cathedral of Orvieto. In 1973, Claudio Barbi purchased the historic estate and began renovating the vineyards and cellar. In 1978, he launched his first wines and is credited with introducing the Metodo Classico (traditional method sparkling wine) to Italy (1978) and noble rot wine, or "Pourriture Noble" (1981). Today, Claudio's son, Enzo, guides the company with the same passion and dedication, continuing the production of high-quality wines and carrying forward the family tradition.
